---

Somewhere in your last few sales conversations, a prospect probably asked whether you have AI. You may not have known exactly what they meant. Most of the time, neither did they.

A couple of years ago you could laugh that question off. Not anymore. In furniture and lighting sales cycles it now comes up in three very different situations, and none of them are hypothetical. A manufacturer tells you their team is already building something similar in-house. An existing account questions a price increase because nobody's sure the reps will touch the AI feature attached to it. A buyer on a first call asks, out of nowhere, what your AI can do.

Three moments, one pressure. "AI" has become part of how buyers judge B2B commerce tools, whether or not the tool in front of them needs it.

## **Why Is Everyone Suddenly Asking You About AI?**

The three situations above come from three different kinds of prospect, and each one wants something different from you.

The first is competitive anxiety wearing a feature's clothes. A manufacturer mentions, almost in passing, that their own team is building an AI-powered system to retrieve and present product information. That's the same job a purpose-built catalog platform does. It's a real, if early, in-house project, and it turns the conversation from "why do we need this" into "[why wouldn't we just build our own](https://thelinecard.com/build-vs-buy-the-real-cost-of-homegrown-and-all-in-one-tools), now that AI makes it easier."

An existing account raises the second one, usually at renewal. They're looking at a higher price and pushing back, but the number isn't really the problem. They doubt their reps will ever open the new AI co-pilot bundled into it. They've watched rollouts die before, and this one comes with a bigger invoice.

Then there's the buyer who has no objection at all. First demo call, pricing hasn't come up yet, and they ask what your AI can do. No agenda. For them it's as routine as "does it work offline?"

The numbers explain the pressure. In HubSpot's 2024 [State of AI report](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/state-of-ai-sales), 43% of sales professionals said they already use AI at work. So the people across the table use it daily and expect to see it everywhere. Supplier-side selling tools lag well behind: Deloitte data from late 2025, reported by [Digital Commerce 360](https://www.digitalcommerce360.com/2026/07/21/b2b-ecommerce-agentic-ai-discovery-deloitte/), found that fewer than 24% of suppliers had used agentic AI anywhere in their selling process. Buyers ask faster than most sellers can honestly answer. That gap is why the question keeps landing on your desk.

## **What Are Buyers Actually Asking, Underneath the Word "AI"?**

"Do you have AI?" is shorthand. The full question behind it changes what a good answer looks like.

One buyer wants to type "brass sconce, warm finish" instead of digging through a category tree. Another is tired of re-keying the same configuration into every quote. A third runs a showroom where designers already use ChatGPT to shortlist products, and she wants her reps to keep up. And now and then the question is defensive: the buyer half expects you to say software will replace the reps they're trying to support.
![Four buyer requests behind “Do you have AI?”](https://blog.supercatsolutions.com/hs-fs/hubfs/what-buyers-mean-by-ai-b2b-sales.webp?width=2560&height=1427&name=what-buyers-mean-by-ai-b2b-sales.webp)

Four different requests. "Yes, we have AI" answers none of them. Figure out which one you're hearing before you respond.

## **What Can AI Do in a Catalog and Quoting Workflow Today?**

Strip out the hype and a short, real list remains. Every item on it depends on the same thing: structured product data it can read. Here's what AI already does inside a [catalog and quoting workflow](https://thelinecard.com/top-7-sales-app-features-for-furniture-lighting-brands).

Start with search. A designer types "slim brass sconce, warm finish, under $400" and gets a shortlist of matching SKUs in seconds instead of a scavenger hunt through collections. It works today, but only when every product already carries consistent attributes. Deloitte's Paul do Forno made the same point to [Digital Commerce 360](https://www.digitalcommerce360.com/2026/07/21/b2b-ecommerce-agentic-ai-discovery-deloitte/): a single product can have a dozen permutations of color, size, and shape, and how clearly a company defines those permutations decides how often an AI surfaces the product at all. Fast search over messy data still returns messy results. It just returns them faster.

Quotes come together quicker. AI can pull the right configuration, price code, and product details into a draft in seconds, which cuts the re-typing that eats a rep's time between appointments. Notice the word "draft." A person still checks it before it reaches the buyer, and sales teams already work this way: HubSpot found that [98% of sales professionals edit AI-generated text](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/state-of-ai-sales) before sending it. Build that review step into the quoting workflow on purpose rather than hoping reps remember.

Then there's the dull, valuable work of catching bad data. Nobody reads a ten-thousand-SKU catalog line by line hunting for a missing spec, a stale price, or the same chair listed twice. AI-assisted checks flag those gaps before a dealer finds them in a confirmed order.

Clean records also turn into copy with very little effort. A sell sheet or a dealer-facing summary built from a complete product record is close to a solved problem. The catch: generated copy sits downstream of data quality. Feed it a half-empty record and you get a confident, half-empty paragraph.

Finally, usage patterns. Which products reps show and skip, where they stall mid-quote, which collections never make it into a presentation. Pulling that together by hand takes days of reporting. AI-assisted analysis can surface it in an afternoon.

Every item here speeds up access to good data. None of them creates structure that wasn't already there.

## **What Can't AI Do Yet, No Matter How Good the Demo Looks?**

Vendors say the limits out loud far less often than the capabilities. They matter just as much.

Pricing is the big one. Grade-based tiers, tariff scenarios, negotiated price codes for one dealer in one territory: a model working alone, with no governed rules layer behind it, produces a fluent guess that looks like a calculation. Fine as a first draft. Dangerous as the final number, in a business where one wrong quote can cost more than the sale.

Point AI at a catalog that lives in five places (the spec sheet in one folder, the price list in an email, the images on someone's desktop) and it won't fix the mess. You'll get a quick, confident, wrong answer instead of a slow one.

Somebody also has to own the sync between the ERP, the PIM, and everything downstream. AI reads from that system once it exists. It can't reconcile the systems for you.

And no model forces adoption. An AI co-pilot that reps never open behaves like every other sales tool that didn't stick, only with a higher price tag on the unused part. That's the exact objection existing accounts raise when an AI feature shows up in their renewal.
![Comparison table of what AI can and can’t do yet across product search, quotes, data quality, systems, content, and adoption](https://blog.supercatsolutions.com/hs-fs/hubfs/ai-catalog-quoting-workflow-can-cant-do.webp?width=2560&height=1629&name=ai-catalog-quoting-workflow-can-cant-do.webp)

## **Why Does Adoption Decide Whether AI Pays for Itself?**

Every AI feature in a sales workflow lives or dies on the same test every sales tool has always faced: do reps use it?

AI didn't create that problem. It made it sharper. AI features tend to arrive bundled into a price increase or a renewal, not a planned and budgeted rollout. A rep who doesn't trust the tool, or finds it slower than the habit it replaces, won't switch because the tool is technically smarter. An unused capability pays back nothing.

Better AI won't fix this. The same things that have always driven [rep adoption](https://thelinecard.com/why-independent-reps-default-to-someone-elses-brand-at-market) will: make the new thing faster than the old habit, prove it in the first five minutes, and don't ask reps to change three habits at once for one new feature.

## **How Should You Actually Answer "Do You Have AI?"**

Don't answer with yes or no. Answer with a question, then with specifics.

Ask what the buyer pictures: what would this do for your team on a normal Tuesday? Then name the real capability behind it, whether that's plain-language search, faster quote drafts, or cleaner data. A vague "yes" oversells. A defensive dodge undersells. The specific answer does neither.

Put two questions to any AI claim, yours or a vendor's. What is it reading from? Who checks its output before it becomes final? If either one stalls the conversation, the AI label is doing more work than the product behind it.
![“Do you have AI?” in B2B sales, from the buyer’s real request to who checks AI output](https://blog.supercatsolutions.com/hs-fs/hubfs/how-to-answer-do-you-have-ai-b2b-sales.webp?width=2560&height=1763&name=how-to-answer-do-you-have-ai-b2b-sales.webp)

## **What Does "AI-Ready" Really Mean?**

Not a chatbot. A structured product record that AI, and every other tool you run, can actually read.
![ai-Diagram showing how buyer requests, structured product data, and rep adoption decide whether AI sales tools pay off-tools-structured-product-data-rep-adoption](https://blog.supercatsolutions.com/hs-fs/hubfs/ai-sales-tools-structured-product-data-rep-adoption.webp?width=2560&height=1837&name=ai-sales-tools-structured-product-data-rep-adoption.webp)

Gartner puts a number on what happens without one. It [predicts that through 2026, organizations will abandon 60% of AI projects](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-02-26-lack-of-ai-ready-data-puts-ai-projects-at-risk) that aren't supported by AI-ready data. That figure covers every industry, not just furniture and lighting, but the failure looks the same everywhere: the demo runs on a clean sample, then the model meets the real catalog months later and quietly falls apart. AI amplifies whatever data discipline a business already has and exposes the lack of it just as fast. That's why [product information management](https://thelinecard.com/how-product-information-management-drives-sales-performance) is still the unglamorous work under every AI feature that survives past the demo.

Want to know where you stand? Open your own catalog and try to answer the brass-sconce question by hand: slim, warm finish, under $400. Give yourself one minute. If it takes longer than a rep would tolerate on a show floor, no AI layer will fix what sits underneath. Have that conversation before the next buyer asks.

## Frequently Asked Questions

What can AI actually do in B2B sales software for furniture and lighting brands today?

It can run plain-language search across a large digital catalog, draft quotes faster by pulling in the right configuration and pricing, flag incomplete or inconsistent product data, and turn structured specs into sell-sheet copy. All of it depends on clean, centralized product data. AI speeds up access to good data; it doesn't create structure where it doesn't exist.

Can AI replace the need for a product information management system?

No. You can start a digital product catalog from structured product files and connect it to an ERP once you have one. Early on, what matters is keeping product information in one maintained source instead of spreading it across spreadsheets, PDFs, and email. When you compare tools, ask whether each one handles file-based data today and ERP integration later.

Will reps actually use an AI sales tool, or will it go the way of other unused features?

That depends on adoption, not on the AI. Reps skip tools that feel slower than their current habits or ask them to change too much at once, no matter how capable the technology is. An AI feature earns use the way any sales tool does: by being visibly faster the first few times a rep tries it.
